Smart Cities Update

Madison’s Journey to Platinum Bike Status

David Dryer, City of Madison

The Monday keynote address will feature an update on the Smart Cities Collaborative, a new initiative led by Transportation for America with 16 cities across the country. The initiative provides technical assistance to cities as they grapple with the most transformational shift in urban transportation in more than 50 years. The Collaborative was launched to help cities develop policies and implement pilot projects that harness the transformational potential of emerging technologies to solve their transportation and mobility problems. Russ Brooks, Transportation for America's Director of Smart Cities, will provide an update on lessons learned through the Collaborative, the challenges cities are facing and share some of the projects they are developing.

The City of Madison competed in the USDOT Smart City Challenge, and continues working on the initiatives developed during and following that pursuit. As one of the most leading edge cities in this field, Madison was selected to join the Smart Cities Collaborative. Yang Tao, Madison’s Assistant City Traffic Engineer, will discuss the impact that the Challenge and the Collaborative have had on Madison and will update the audience on some of Madison’s Smart City Initiatives.

Monday, June 19th @ 8 AM

Madison recently became one of the 5 cities to be awarded a Platinum Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The City of Madison will share its story on promoting bicycle transportation, some of the innovative biking infrastructure treatments, and its path to the platinum status.

Tuesday, June 20th @ 12 PM

Join Arthur Ross, Madison’s Pedestrian & Bicycle Coordinator, on a tour of Madison’s bicycle facilities.  The three hour tour will be slow paced with plenty of stops to discuss facility design concepts and issues including retrofitting these facilities in already built up areas.  We will ride and discuss shared use paths, bicycle lanes, bicycle boulevards and neighborhood traffic calmed streets. We will pay attention to intersection treatments, signage and traffic signals.

BCycle bikes will be provided. Distance covered will be approximately 10 – 12 miles at an easy pace.  We will take a refreshment break during the ride.  Please wear comfortable clothing. Water will be provided. Helmets are recommended but not required. Remember to wear sun screen!

Plan to meet in Conference Room III for the tour.

PTOE Refresher Course

Workshop and Introduction

This workshop will present Module 1 from the PTOE Refresher Course, which provides an overview of traffic operations studies and presents an overview of PTOE certification and examination.

Workshop participants will receive a PDF of the module presentation, a complimentary student supplement for practicing engineers who intend to take the PTOE certification examination, a copy of the PTOE overview presentation and a PTOE refresher course outline.

Participants will be allowed access to the recording of the PTOE refresher course module again for up to 90 days after the event (before expiration) and if they complete the survey, they will be able to receive the 1.5 PDH credits in their ITE Learning Hub e-transcript along with a certificate of completion.

Workshops and Training

Tuesday, June 20th, 1:30 PM to 4 PM

Odd as it may seem, appreciating uncertainty in ethical matters may make us better people.  We will review different and competing accounts of the ethical fabric underlying our ethical practices and behaviors before employing them in both fictionalized and real-life thought experiments designed to push and sharpen the acumen of our inner ethical-compass. With a bit of luck, humor, and gross harm inflicted on our fictionalized figures, we will come to better appreciate the process behind sound ethical thinking in the engineering profession … even if the world wherein we employ it could give a damn.

Ethical Rationales in a World that May not Give a Damn

For informed decision making about traffic management strategies in work zones, one needs to know queue length and its growth and shrinkage rates. Three types of queuing conditions happen in highway and arterial work zones: 1-Moving queue that occurs when vehicles in queue are moving at considerable speeds. 2-Stopped queue that occurs when vehicles are completely stopped or their speeds are so low that they can be assumed practically stopped. 3-Combination of stopped and moving queue that occurs when traffic stops for a certain time period and then moves.  This workshop will discuss how to compute queue length for each queueing condition. It will show how a simple input-output procedure that may work well for a stopped queue condition, may not work well when there is moving queue or a combination of queues. A computer program called WorkZoneQ-Pro will be used to discuss the advantage and disadvantages of approaches one may take. Application of the program for arterial mid-block work zones and freeway work zones will be demonstrated.
