Madison's origins begin in 1829, when former federal judge James Duane Doty purchased 1,200 acres of land for $1,500 in the isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, with the intention of building a city. Doty name the city Madison for James Madison, the 4th President of the United States, and named the streets for the other 39 signers of the U.S. Constitution. Madison was voted as the capital of the Wisconsin territory late in 1836.
